Developing community skills, encouraging participation and personal choice

Some individuals with developmental disabilities benefit from structured opportunities to practice social interaction, decision-making, communication, and participation in everyday community settings. This type of support may be relevant when a person is working on using community resources, developing relationships, making choices, or exploring volunteer and employment opportunities. In Baltimore County, activities can provide opportunities to practice these skills in situations that extend beyond the home or program setting.

How It Works

The program provides structured support in two primary areas:

Socialization Skills

  • Maintaining interpersonal relationships
  • Developing self-advocacy skills
  • Responding to health and safety concerns as necessary
  • Exercising choice and participating in activity planning
  • Practicing problem-solving skills
  • Communicating with others and understanding emotions and social cues
  • Participating in community outings

Employment and Vocational Skills

  • Participating in person-centered and volunteer activities in the community
  • Using community services such as public transportation
  • Practicing appropriate responses to safety situations
  • Using community resources to support productivity, competency, and independence
  • Using the internet to explore employment and volunteer opportunities
  • Participating in volunteer or employment opportunities

What to Expect

Individuals participate in structured activities that give them opportunities to practice skills in social and community settings. Depending on their circumstances and objectives, activities may involve communication with others, community outings, use of public transportation, volunteer exploration, or employment-related activities. Support is centered on providing opportunities to practice these skills through actual participation rather than limiting learning to instruction alone.
