Assisting with home routines, connecting individuals with community resources

Managing a home and participating in the community can require different levels of assistance depending on an individual’s abilities and daily support needs. Personal Support is intended for individuals with developmental disabilities who live in their own home, with family, or with other unrelated individuals and need assistance with everyday activities and community participation. In Anne Arundel County and throughout the confirmed SHSG service area, support can be provided around the individual’s existing living arrangement rather than requiring a move to a residential group setting.

How It Works

SHSG provides training and support with activities such as:

Meal preparation and food shopping

Housekeeping

Personal grooming and hygiene

Money management, including banking

Transportation services

Medication administration

Twenty-four-hour emergency assistance

Communication and social skills training

Participation in community activities

Accessing community resources

Support levels identified by SHSG include:

Personal Supports

For individuals needing up to 81 hours of support per week

Supported Living

For individuals needing more than 82 but fewer than 138 hours of support per week

What to Expect

Support is provided within the individual’s existing home or living arrangement and is directed toward the practical activities identified as requiring assistance. Depending on the individual’s support level, services may involve help with household responsibilities, personal routines, medication, transportation, community participation, and other identified needs. The supplied service description distinguishes Personal Supports and Supported Living according to the stated weekly support-hour ranges, allowing the service level to correspond with the amount of assistance identified for the individual.
